The airfield served as a training site for 19 bombardment groups and 73 bombardment squadrons flying B-24s and B-29s.The open airspace of 38 miles wide and 64 miles long between the Sacramento, Organ and San Andres Mountains were a bonus for the increased training required by the Army Air Forces.
